Dendroecological analyses of moisture conditions and climatically controlled ecosystem responses along an elevation gradient in the central Nepal Himalaya
The extreme and complex topography of the Himalaya leads to substantial spatial variations in climatic variables such as radiation, air temperature, and precipitation resulting in high variability of local climatic conditions. Nepal, located on the southern slope of the Himalayas, possesses a steep north-south temperature gradient and an east-west precipitation gradient. Being under the South Asian Summer Monsoon (SASM) influence, Nepal receives most of its annual precipitation during the summer monsoon (June-September) season. In recent years, due to the weakening of the SASM, the frequency of drought events increased, with adverse effects on the human population but also forest ecosystems. In this study, we examined the response of different conifer species to the moisture conditions along an elevation gradient using tree-ring width and stable oxygen isotopes in tree-ring cellulose (δ18OTR). We found a declining trend of mean δ18OTR with increasing elevation. The TRW showed inconsistent response with the climate throughout the elevation gradient. On the other hand, Inter-annual variations of δ18OTR were correlated to SASM precipitation at all sites and for all studied species. However, the response was stronger at the higher elevation. Besides, the average resilience and resistance of the species calculated using TRW during predefined drought events followed the declining trend with the increase in elevation. The preliminary results show that with less resistance and resilience, the species in higher altitudes are more susceptible to drought events in the region.
